Major Incident Planning with Silverstone’s Medical Services Manager John Atkins

Planning the best for the worst at the #BritishGP

During the Formula 1 Rolex British Grand Prix weekend (12 – 14 July 2019) Silverstone will welcome over 375,000 visitors to the venue, a crowd size not seen at the circuit since 1992. This number, on top of the 7,000 staff, contractors and volunteers working at the site inevitably generates casualties for Silverstone’s Medical Services.

John Atkins is Silverstone’s Medical Services Manager who together with other multi-agency colleagues has been working on the medical arrangements for the British Grand Prix weekend for many weeks. John, a Registered Paramedic and formerly a Senior Ambulance Officer, took over as Medical Services Manager in January 2019 and is keen to ensure the medical personnel on duty at the venue have the right equipment to deal with not only the expected but also worst-case scenarios.

John explains “One of the problems with providing Medical Services at a venue like Silverstone is the need to ramp up stock levels of consumables for large events but then wastage inevitably follows when those items expire. Since coming into this role at the beginning of the year, I have been meeting with our suppliers – to explore ways of reducing waste and cutting our costs, without compromising patient safety.”

SP Services are a major supplier to Silverstone and John was keen to see if we would be able to assist in strengthening Silverstone’s contingency plans around major incident medical equipment. John especially wanted to be able to provide stocks of dressings and other basic materials for use in large incidents, stored in pre-planned locations around the 760 acre venue, which could be swiftly deployed to an incident if required.

After a series of discussions with the team at SP Services, including a visit to their HQ in Telford, we were able to come up with a tailor-made solution – which meets our operational requirement but also limits our financial outlay and reduces waste.  I am really pleased with the result, and am looking forward to having the equipment out there around the venue, though of course I also hope none of it is needed.


The new SP Services ‘Silverstone Major Incident Kits’ will be rolled out at the event next weekend, accompanying the decontamination kits purchased earlier in the year and will help John’s team offer the best support in case of an emergency.
